HOW TO DRAW A MONKEY!

For Beginners

Step 1

These shapes will be the building blocks for your drawing. They're called "Primitives" due to their simplicity. Once you know how to use primitives to build your drawings, you'll find that you can draw absolutely ANYTHING!

Practice drawing some of these simple shapes. Don't worry about making them perfect--your drawing will have much more energy if you loosen up and have fun with it!

Step 2

First, draw a circle for the head (start close to the top of the paper to leave room for the rest of the body).

Just under the head, draw an oval for the body. Remember, you don't have to draw perfect shapes--rough shapes are more interesting.

Finally, draw two triangles--side by side. These will be the monkey's legs

Step 3

To make the feet, draw an orange slice at the base of each triangle/leg.

Your monkey needs arms now. How else can he peel a banana? Draw a noodle shape for each arm. Point one noodle up and one noodle down.

Draw a rectangle for each hand.

Step 4

The upper hand is palm out. Draw a line through the rectangle, dividing it in half. This will describe the ends of the fingers. The lower hand is palm down (so you won't see individual fingers). Draw a small rectangle for the thumb.

To help draw the monkey's face, you need to make some guidelines--you will erase these later, so they are shown as dotted lines. One line cuts the circle in half horizontally (side to side). The other line cuts the circle in half vertically (up and down).

Step 5

Draw a circle on each side of the face--these will be the eyes. Use the horizontal guidline to help you place the eyes. Draw small dots inside the circles--these will be the monkey's eyeballs.

Over the eyes, draw a double archway, with the two arches meeting at the middle vertical line. This will be the brow ridge.

Just beneath the eyes, draw another--much smaller--double archway. This will be the nose. Place small dots in each arch to make nostrils (monkeys do need to breathe, you know).

Just beneath the nose, draw a long upwardly pointing curve, so your monkey can smile.

Step 6

Now you need to finish some more of the details. You must add ears! Draw an orange slice on each side of the head. Finish the right hand (pointing upward) by drawing three evenly-spaced lines for fingers. To finish the hand, draw a small "L" that begins in the middle of the fingers.

Add the toes. Draw small curves for the toes. The curve of the toes follows the curve of the feet.

Step 7

Your monkey will be very cold without fur. To keep him warm, you should add fur all over his body--including his head. Just make small teardrop shapes all over! Darken in the outside lines and the main features of the face, feet, and hands.

The gray lines are the ones that you will erase.

Step 8

After you erase the guiding lines, your monkey is complete!

Ummm... wait, he seems to be missing something. What is it? Monkeys swing easily through the trees, using their arms and legs and... what?

Step 9

Oh, yeah, I remember now!

The monkey needs a tail! You can add a tail of any length. Remember, a monkey can move his tail in any direction, so have fun drawing it!

Step 10

After you finish the drawing, you can color it with anything you like to use. You can use crayons, magic markers, colored pencils, or even a computer. It's up to you!
